Geometric & Arabesque Pattern Workshops
with Adam Williamson
New York — 20–21 June 2026
Location: Madison Square Park Tower
This two-day programme offers a rigorous exploration of geometric and biomorphic pattern traditions across the Islamic world, structured as a progressive studio-based learning experience.
Beginning with the foundations of Islamic geometric design, participants are introduced to classical compass-and-straightedge constructions, proportional systems, and the governing logic of symmetry and grid structures. The programme then expands into the relationship between sacred geometry and natural form, including the construction of the golden proportion spiral, before examining how these principles manifest in architectural and ornamental contexts—culminating in the drawing of Mughal and Moorish arches in perspective.
The second day shifts toward arabesque and regional traditions. Participants engage with Moroccan zellij geometry, the structural logic of arabesque composition, and pattern systems rooted in the Silk Road heritage of Uzbekistan, with reference to the architectural ornament of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.
The course integrates historical context, formal analysis, and contemporary studio practice. All sessions are supported by curated digital reference material for continued study.
Designed as a natural progression for returning participants, the workshop remains fully accessible to beginners. All materials are provided.
