We are honored to begin the season with Oludamini Ogunnaike, Associate Professor of African Religious Thought and Democracy at the University of Virginia. Ogunnaike’s research bridges philosophy, Sufi metaphysics, and literary studies, exploring the intellectual and artistic dimensions of Islamic and West African religious traditions. He is author of Deep Knowledge: Ways of Knowing in Sufism and Ifa and Poetry in Praise of Prophetic Perfection, which examine how spiritual insight and poetic form shape modes of knowing and expression.
The ghazal is more than a lyrical form: it is a disciplined structure where love, longing, and metaphysical inquiry are woven into tightly articulated couplets, inviting both reader and writer into sustained reflection on desire, presence, and the limits of expression. This workshop will explore how the ghazal’s rich tradition can be meaningfully realized in English without losing its depth or aesthetics.
